Merilyn's (and Bruce's) hike up Cat Bells peak

Friday 8th September

Opened the curtains early, not raining, clouds high, "we're off to do Cat Bells", says Merilyn. Cat Bells is a mountain peak on the opposite side of Derwent Water to Keswick. Rated as a difficult hike and should take about an hour and a half to the top - it will take us oldies at least 2!

Breakfasted, packed and ready to go by 9.30am. Five minute walk to town, to pick up some rolls, another five minutes to wharf number 1 to catch the ferry which goes anti-clockwise around the lake, and we are off with Cat Bells in sight - can we do it? We'll start and turn back if it's too hard.

Left the boat at a small pier, with about 6 other people, walked a short distance through lovely green forest, through the 'kissing gate' - always fun, and the climb begins!

Soon there are good views across the lake to Keswick on one side and lovely views into a valley on the other. We are glad we have come and "we are going to keep going" "Yes Merilyn"

Track getting steeper, quite a bit of scrambling over rocky sections, sometimes a steep drop to the side, "don't look down", and great views. We are going to get there!

                                                         And we did!

It wasn't long before there was someone to talk to.
Then the rain started and continued until we were over the top, down the other side, during lunch which we had standing up under umbrellas, and was easing only off when we waved down the boat for our trip back to Keswick, arriving home at about 4.00pm, sore, tired, and very pleased with ourselves - a great day.
